A rustic charm and a down-home welcome are to be found all along the coastline of North Central Florida, which is made up of shallow swimming and wading areas, marshes and forested fringes rather than sandy beaches. Explore some of the Panhandle's unusual bluff landscape and rare vegetation in the Torreya State Park region.

Special Deals for Vacationers
Let's face it, would you rather be digging snow out of your driveway this winter, wearing a heavy coat and awkward boots . . . or wandering along a sandy, palm fringed beach in your shorts, letting the sea wash between your toes?       I know what I would rather be doing.
To encourage you to head to the Sunshine State this winter, a number of local tourism offices have met with the hotel, motel and restaurant managers in their areas and put together special deals and discounts just for you.

Sorry . . . we are not aware of any special deals in this area . . . yet.

Hotels, Motels and Resort Lodging

Arguably, the state of Florida has more available accommodation for its visitors, than any other state of the Union . . . and these can range from a simple Kampground Of America (KOA) cabin to a full service resort. Here we offer some of our favorites for this section of the "Sunshine State."

Jameson Inn (exit 82, Lake City) - we recommend the Jameson Inns no matter where you are. They are always clean, the staff are very pleasant and friendly, and an excellent breakfast is included in your room charge. Free newspaper, free local phone calls make this the perfect place to stay while "on the road."

Inn at Park Avenue (Tallahassee) - This beautiful 1838 private home decorated with many fine antiques has been in the same family for 156 years, and host Ann knows the area and its history very well indeed. The Inn is within walking distance of the Florida Capitol Building . . . so you never know who your fellow guests will be. Surrounded by old live oak trees and a park just across from the front door, the Inn at Park Avenue is a lovely chance to "turn back the clock" and stay in a gracious era from the past.

Attractions and Museums
There are so many fascinating things to see and do as you travel around Florida. From prehistoric archaeological sites to the space age technology of the Space Coast; from "native" Florida to the theme parks of Central Florida . . . there is something for everybody. Here we have provided links to the websites of the attractions in this area.

Mission San Luis (Tallahassee) - The old Spanish Mission of San Luis de Apalachee has to be the "jewel in the crown" of Florida's historical sites. Settled in 1633 on the Spanish Mission Trail between St. Augustine (capital of Spanish East Florida) and Pensacola (capital of Spanish West Florida), the site has been an active archeological site for a number of years now. It was recently recognized by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Don't miss the magnificent reconstruction of the original Mission building, Apalachee Meeting House and 17th century Spanish cottage. Costumed guides and interpreters add realism to your visit. The site also has an excellent museum and gift shop.

Museum of Florida History (Tallahassee) - You would expect a state with as rich a history as Florida to have an excellent museum documenting its past. It does ... the Museum of Florida History in the Capitol area. Spanning the eras from prehistoric times to the famous "hanging chad" voting equipment of the 2000 Presidential election, there is something here for everybody.

I particularly enjoy the exhibits of early RV equipment from the days of the "Tin Can Tourists." With today's deluxe Class "A" motorhomes or 5th Wheel trailers with slide-outs, we've certainly come a long way.

Shopping Malls and Outlet Centers
Like many other "Snowbirds," I enjoy trips to Florida shopping malls . . . especially if I know that snow is swirling in the north.

There's a perverse pleasure in being able to leave your car (no heavy boots, coats, snow shovel or ice scrapper) in the warm, sunny parking area and heading into the air-conditioned mall.

Fashions are always "summery" - even in January and everything always appears clean and fresh.

Here are some of the retail shopping malls (and let's not forget the factory outlets or antique malls) in this area of Florida.

Golf Courses and Facilities

The sun . . . golf . . . fresh air . . . Florida. They all seem to go together making the "Sunshine State" a golfers paradise.

Here you'll find links (pun definitely intended) to the area's golf courses and facilities. Enjoy!
